Billboard and Telemundo announced today that international mega-star Christina Aguilera, will be honored with the Billboard Spirit of Hope Award for her extensive philanthropic work. In addition, the singer and composer has chosen the Billboard Latin Music Awards stage for a special performance.
The prestigious awards show will broadcast live on Telemundo on Thursday, September 29th at 7pm/6c from the Watsco Center in Miami, Florida. The coveted event will also be simulcast on the Hispanic entertainment cable channel, Universo, Peacock, the Telemundo App, and throughout Latin America and the Caribbean on Telemundo Internacional.
Christina Aguilera has sold more than 75 million records worldwide and has achieved five No.1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making her the third female artist, and fourth overall, to top the chart during the 90s, ‘00s and ‘10s. The singer-songwriter has received multiple accolades, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the inaugural Music Icon Award at the People’s Choice Awards in 2021. In addition, she was the only artist under the age of 30 to be included in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 100 greatest singers of all time. Indeed, Aguilera’s powerful voice is renowned around the world, not only at a musical level, but also in support of various causes to help those who need it most.
Over the course of her impressive career, Christina Aguilera has been open about having lived in a home with domestic violence, and because of this she has lifted her voice to help end the cycle of abuse. During her Las Vegas residency, she donated a portion of ticket proceeds to The Shade Tree, a 24-hour accessible shelter for victims of domestic violence in Southern Nevada, and in 2021 her Billboard NFT cover supported the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV). Aguilera has also been a longtime supporter and ally to the LGBTQ+ community and has supported equality since the beginning of her career. This also led her to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS research, performing at three galas for amfAR, the AIDS research foundation, in Los Angeles, South Florida and Cannes, raising money to end this epidemic.
The singer has also traveled the globe to help feed children in poverty-stricken areas. As a global ambassador for World Hunger Relief Effort, she has helped raise over $150 million for the World Food Program and other hunger relief agencies since 2009.
Created in honor of Selena, the Billboard Spirit of Hope Award is given to an artist in recognition of their extraordinary philanthropic and humanitarian contributions beyond their musical work. Previous recipients of the Billboard Spirit of Hope Award include Carlos Santana, Carlos Vives, Daddy Yankee, El General, Emmanuel, Gloria Estefan, Juanes, Juan Luis Guerra, Los Tigres del Norte, Luis Fonsi, Maná, Marc Anthony, Olga Tañón, Ricardo Montaner, Ricky Martin, Shakira, Soraya, and Willy Chirino.
