We've always believed that Beyoncé is a real-life goddess, but her Grammys performance just confirmed it.
The Lemonade songstress took the stage this past Sunday draped in yellow with an ornate gold headdress, channeling Oshun, Oxúm and Ochún - the goddess of love, marriage and fertility in the Yoruba religion. She is also known as Our Lady of Caridad del Cobre, and is regarded as patroness of Cuba by her devotees, who celebrate her feast day on September 8th.
This isn’t the first time Queen Bey pays homage to the Goddess. In Lemonade’s second single Hold Up, Beyoncé is dressed in yellow, like Oshun, surrounded by fresh water.
Folktales describe Oshun as extremely vengeful, to those who have hurt her and her children; and in the video, Beyonce walks around with a sinister smile smashing store windows, cars and cameras after she was wronged.
In the dream I am crowning
Osun,
Nefertiti,
And yemoja
Pray around my bed,
I can smell jasmine,
I wake up as someone
Places a wreath
Upon my head
You are just full of surprises, B.
Aché pa'ti y Aché pa'mi.
