TELEMUNDO POLL: STATE OF THE LATINO VOTE IN NEVADA
DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES JOE BIDEN AND BERNIE SANDERS ARE IN A VIRTUAL TIE FOR NEVADA’S LATINO VOTE
No Other Candidates Show Strength Among Hispanic Voters
Although a Quarter of Respondents Credit President Trump for Paying More Attention to Issues That Affect Latinos Than Most Other Candidates, 60% of Registered Latino Voters in Nevada Disapprove of Donald Trump’s Performance; 61% Are Ready to Replace Him
LAS VEGAS – (February 18, 2020) – As Latinos in Nevada prepare to flex their political muscle in Nevada’s February 22 caucuses, the first voting state that is home to a significant number of registered Latino voters, and as audiences prepare to watch the February 19 Democratic MSNBC / NBC News / The Nevada Independent debate in Las Vegas, Telemundo today unveiled results from its exclusive new survey that polled likely Latino voters in Nevada. The Telemundo poll shows that Democratic presidential candidates Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders are in a statistical tie for Nevada’s Latino vote. This narrow margin could be detrimental to Biden, who will need a much higher level of support from Latinos to become the Democratic party’s presidential nominee. In addition, Telemundo’s poll revealed that 64% of likely Latino voters in Clark County and 71% of female likely Latino voters statewide are ready to vote Trump out of office
The “Telemundo Poll: State of the Latino Vote in Nevada” was conducted from February 10 to February 12, 2020. A total of 625 registered Hispanic voters statewide were interviewed live by telephone in Nevada about statewide issues and the general election questions. All indicated they were likely to vote in the 2020 election. Those interviewed were randomly selected from a phone-matched Nevada voter registration list that included both land-line and cell phone numbers. The margin of error for these questions is +/- 4 percentage points. The survey also includes an over-sampling of 362 Latino Democrats, who indicated they were likely to vote in the state’s February 22 Democratic caucus. These voters were only asked questions relative to the caucus and not statewide issues/general election. The margin of sample for these results is +/- 5.3 percentage points.
Telemundo’s “State of the Latino Vote in Nevada” survey kicks off a series of local and national polls that Telemundo will unveil this year with a specific focus on the Latino electorate, ahead of Election Day. Telemundo and its local stations have already released several national and regional Latino voter opinion polls since 2018.
Key findings for Telemundo’s State of the Latino Vote in Nevada poll include:
- On the Economy: Overwhelming number of respondents feel better or the same about the state of our economy since President Trump took office in 2016;
- On Latino Issues: Almost a quarter of the population surveyed, regardless of party, think that President Trump is paying more attention to the issues that affect the Latino community than all other candidates, with the exception of Bernie Sanders;
- On the 2020 Census: Respondents are united around the importance of being counted in the upcoming census: 93% of those polled said they’ll participate in the decennial Census.
