Recently, J Balvin shared on Instagram his point of view in regards to the 2019 Latin Grammys nominees urban discontent and stated that just because reggaeton moves the masses that doesn’t mean that it’s the best produced and written music.
However, the “Mi Gente” singer addressed that the urban music category has become so wide by including genres like rap, pop, and latin trap that it’s created confusion. Therefore, each one of these genre’s should have their own category at the award show.
On Tuesday (Sept. 24th), the Latin Recording Academy announced the nominees for the 20th Latin GRAMMY Awards.
Rosalía is the most nominated female artist this year with 7 nominations. Spanish singer, Alejandro Sanz is this year’s top nominee with a total of eight nominations
Although Bad Bunny, Daddy Yankee and Ozuna received nominations, various urban artists called out the Latin Recording Academy on social media for their lack of urban music including DY himself.
“Without reggaeton, there’s no Latin Grammys,” is what the graphic that urban artists are sharing on social media reads.
It all started with a post from Pina Records in which, the president of the company jokingly expressed his concern on Instagram. “Congratulations to Natti Natasha, Karol G, and Becky G for being chosen by the people as Women of Power and having the success they have without being measured by a shitty of voting academy. I support the feminine talent and although the prizes do not attract my attention, I comment so that they don’t ask for favors, much less publicity with the feminine power. PD! The King of Bachata doesn't NOMINATE him either? Thats weird ...”
Anuel AA shared a video on Instagram explaining his concern and how they had the nerve to nominate just a few reggaeton artists. The Latin trap star also addressed the fact that the King of Bachata, Romeo Santos who recently performed in front of 85,000 people still hasn’t received a Latin Grammy.

That is the reason for our call and why R E G G A E T O N raised it’s voice. They have to learn more about all genres in urban music, not all are equal. Do try to benefit from the genre without respecting our art!
