A Timeline of Miley Cyrus & Liam Hemsworth's On-and-Off Romance

Billboard is looking back at all of Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth's on-and-off relationship, from the very beginning up until today.

The world gasped in unison when news broke over the weekend that Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth split after less than a year of marriage. While the couple was on again and off again for some time before their marriage, they celebrated their 10-year anniversary this past June and have generally appeared stronger than ever through several public appearances, including this year's Met Gala.

Because their relationship has been a decade-long, up-and-down emotional roller coaster, Billboard is looking back at all the couple’s moments, from the very beginning up until today.

2009 - The two meet on the set of The Last Song

At this point, Cyrus is already a famous Disney Channel star. Then she got cast to star in the movie adaptation of Nicholas Spark’s novel alongside Hemsworth. The two begin dating over the course of three months while filming on Tybee Island in Savannah, Georgia.

March 2010 - They go public with their relationship

While they began dating on the Last Song set, they both denied it. Cyrus tweeted that she does “not have a boyfriend” all while the two were spotted making out around the same time. It is finally confirmed in the next year, when they make their debut as a couple at the film’s red carpet premiere.

August 2010 - The couple calls it quits

Just five months after dazzling with their red carpet debut, the two call it quits. Soon after though, they rekindle their love over milk and cookies at the private dining room inside LA’s Katsuya. Over the course of the next year or so, they make several appearances as a couple at events, like the CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tributegala.

March 2012 - Engagement rumors begin

After Cyrus is seen wearing a ring at an event, rumors of a potential engagement begin to intensify so much that the singer has to take to Twitter to squash the false info. “I’m not engaged,” she wrote. "I've worn this same ring on this finger since November! People just wanna find something to talk about!" Apparently, it was just topaz.

June 2012 - They actually get engaged

Only three months after engagement rumors, Cyrus confirms the two are actually engaged and that Hemsworth proposed with a 3.1-carat Neil Lane diamond ring on May 31.

2013 - More rumors begin, but this time about a potential split

This is when things start to get a little bit rocky. Cyrus fully throws herself into her music career for her album Bangerz and is seen without her ring. Later in September, Cyrus confirms the split. "I don't think I realized what 19 truly is, and I got engaged at 19, and I definitely wouldn't change being engaged. It was so fun wearing a fat rock for a few years," she says on Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2013. "But now, I just feel like I can actually be happy."

2014-2015 - Cyrus goes experimental

On-brand with her controversial album Bangerz, Cyrus is also linked with a couple of different romantic partners. First she is seen with Patrick Schwarzenegger and then Victoria’s Secret model Stella Maxwell. In August 2015, she comes out as pansexual and single.

2016 - Cyrus and Hemsworth are spotted together at a music festival in Australia

Elsa Pataky -- the wife of Hemsworth’s brother Chris -- shares a photo of her hanging out with Cyrus at Bryon Bay. Shortly after, Cyrus is seen wearing her engagement ring again and the two are fully back on.

Hemsworth talked about their time apart to GQ Australia: "Of course it was hard, man. But at the time we were going in different directions, and it's just what needed to happen," he tells the mag. "We were both super young, and it was a good decision at the time -- we both needed that."

2017-2018 - The couple is in full force as Cyrus releases Younger Now

The two seem to be stronger than ever, and Cyrus dedicates her lead single, “Malibu,” to Liam. Later that year, in November 2018, the home they have together is destroyed in the California wildfires.

Dec. 2018 - Cyrus & Hemsworth get married

After a decade of their on-again and off-again relationship, the two tie the knot at their Nashville home on Christmas Eve, after losing their Malibu home.

"We really fell in love quickly and had a really strong connection from the beginning and I think in the back of my head I knew it was on the cards, but we weren’t planning to have a wedding anytime soon,” Hemsworth told GQ Australia. “Then just going through something this emotional with someone, it brings you closer and we felt like we’d lost a big part of our lives, so we wanted to make a new part of our lives. It was something really good coming out of a horrible situation. It was going to happen eventually, but I think this just sped it up a little bit."

The two were very happy to have an intimate wedding among close friends and family. Cyrus shares several photos of her in her wedding gown, embracing her new hubby on Instagram.

Aug. 10, 2019 - Cyrus and Hemsworth split after eight months of marriage, Cyrus is seen getting cozy with Kaitlynn Carter on vacation

Right before news of Cyrus and Hemsworth’s split broke, Cyrus proved that she really “Can’t Be Tamed” and is seen vacationing in Lake Como with Brody Jenner’s ex, Carter, that same day.

The two were seen sunbathing, cuddling and kissing. A rep for the singer shared this statement with Billboard: “Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time. Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of the animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy.”

One week before, Jenner and Carter announced that they decided to “amicably separated,” although they were never legally married in the first place, unlike Cyrus and Hemsworth. The four of them were all close.

Aug. 11 - Cyrus breaks her silence after the announcement of the split

In Cyrus’ first social media post since the announcement, the singer, posing in front of mountains in Italy, wrote: "Don’t fight evolution, because you will never win. Like the mountain I am standing on top of , which was once under water , connected with Africa , change is inevitable. The Dolomites were not created over night, it was over millions of years that this magnificent beauty was formed. My dad always told me “ Nature never hurries but it is always on time”.... it fills my heart with peace and hope KNOWING that is true. I was taught to respect the planet and its process and I am committed to doing the same with my own ...."

Aug. 13 - Hemsworth releases statement via Instagram

A few days after Cyrus broke the silence on social media, Hemsworth came back with his own statement, "I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward," he wrote. "This is a private matter and I have not made, nor will I be making, any comments to any journalists or media outlets. Any reported quotes attributed to me are false."
