For recent high school graduate Nat Werth, life has been pretty surreal. The 18-year-old was barred from speaking as valedictorian at his high school graduation because he wanted to use the moment to come out to his classmates. Since then, the teen has seen a wave of support from his family, friends, the city of Milwaukee, and now pop diva Jennifer Lopez. 

Last week (July 3), Lopez met Werth backstage at her It’s My Party Tour stop in Milwaukee to pose for a photo. The star then shared that photo and a news clip on her social media two days later, thanking the young man for using his platform for good. “Nat, thank you for celebrating with me... Always standing with you,” she wrote. “Continue to use your voice and spread only love and acceptance. Don’t stop being you.”

Werth later said in a statement to the Today show that he was thrilled to meet Lopez, saying it was “absolutely an amazing experience [I] will never forget.”

Werth gained significant national attention last month when he was interviewed by Buzzfeed about his experience being rejected for his speech at the Sheboygan Lutheran High School commencement ceremony. "A lot of people have said they feel bad for me,” he said. “But I’d rather have people feel happy that someone is finally standing up to the administration [and] speaking up for what’s right and trying to change Lutheran High School for the better.”
