J Balvin Talks History-Making Moves: First Reggaetonero on 'SNL,' Headlining Festivals & More

J Balvin stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where he recounted some of his highlights, surreal collaborations, and Lollapalooza.

J Balvin has etched his name in the history books, more than once. And he’s only getting started.

The “Mi Gente” singer stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday night, where he recounted some of his highlights, his surreal collaborations and his history-making Lollapalooza slot this August.

The Medellín, Colombia native has just come off a run of firsts, including a SNL performance with DJ Khaled who, we learned, calls himself “Billy,” apparently because he wants to become a billionaire. Balvin was the first reggaeton performer on the long-running comedy show, and he’ll be the first Latin artist to headline Lollapalooza, when he takes the stage Aug. 3 at Chicago’s Grant Park.

The artist, born José Álvaro Osorio Balvin, isn’t new to the big league. Last year, he got the call of a lifetime to join Beyoncé on stage at Coachella, or rather, Beychella, a moment captured for the Netflix Homecoming documentary. He admitted he was “super nervous” about his own headline performance at the fest, but he didn’t have time to freak out about Queen Bey’s offer. He was in bed when Bey’s people rang, which he said came just five hours before the show.

Balvin also talked about his own fashion sense, his “Vibras” capsule with Guess, and his dream to spread the love by only singing in his native tongue, Spanish. “That’s always been my dream, to really cross over into Spanish,” he told the late-night host. “It’s really beautiful the way people are reacting to our music, even though they don’t understand what I’m saying, they feel the vibe."

Late in the show, Balvin joined forces with Sean Paul for a performance of their funky bilingual single “Contra La Pared”. Watch it below.
