Pedro Capó Shares Best Moments, Street Food & Places in Puerto Rico in 'Growing Up Latino'

Pedro Capo's "Calma" describes the island life, and for the newest episode of Growing Up Latino, he tells us more about his life in Puerto Rico.

Pedro Capo's song "Calma" describes how you can spend a relaxing day in Puerto Rico, and for the newest episode of Growing Up Latino, the singer tells us more about his life on the island.

First, what is a medalla and why does he mention it during “Calma” song? "Medalla is Puerto Rico’s national treasure, as I call it," Capó says. "It's a Puerto Rican national beer -- a great light beer for a beach day.”

He also remembers that his mother listened to music when cleaning the house. "I remember the ballads of the eighties when my mom was cleaning, sometimes I'd listen to, like, Amanda Miguel or something like that and I'll smell the Fabulous," he says.

As a child, Capo was naughty; he admits he'd often get hit with the age-old disciplinary tactic: "The chancleta has boomerang properties." However, his childhood memories are mostly fond. "Growing up Latino is having a grandmother dancing when she's cooking. It's music all over the place," he says. "It's endless Christmases. It's, ah, twenty thousand cousins. It's yummy food."

Among the places that Capo recommends to visit are Old San Juan, the beaches, and the mountains: "Go check the bioluminescent bay in Fajardo or Parguera. Got to go check the little islands off there, Vieques and Culebra, two islands outside of Puerto Rico. "

As for what Puerto Ricans eat when they go on local jaunts? They stop at kiosks located on the coast to eat alcapurrias and bacalaitos from the coast of Puerto Rico.
