Maluma Reveals He Wants to Collaborate With Shawn Mendes at 2018 MTV VMAs: Watch

Maluma caught up with Billboard at the 2018 MTV VMAs, chatting about Shakira, plans for the rest of 2018, and future collaborations.

Maluma caught up with Billboard’s Chelsea Briggs on Monday (Aug. 20) at the 2018 MTV VMAs, chatting about working with Shakira, plans for the rest of 2018 and revealing that he would love to collaborate with Shawn Mendes.

Asked why he thinks he and Shakira gel so well together in the studio, Maluma says that he believes in energy and chemistry. “Since the first time that I met Shakira, I went to the studio and we had the opportunity to do ‘Chantaje,’ then we did ‘Trap’ and after that, we had the opportunity of making ‘Clandestino,’ that is our latest song,” he tells Billboard. “I think it’s something about energy. I love her, she’s such a master and I have a lot of respect for her.

As for what his plans are for the rest of the year, Maluma says that he has “a lot of things” in the works. “I’m gonna keep doing music, a lot of music,” he says. “I’m coming with a lot of projects, underground music, commercial music. I’m trying to do this kind of crossover with different artists, a lot of collaborations. I want to be part of every movement.”

Posed with the question of who he would like to work with that might surprise people, Maluma names Shawn Mendes, calling the “In My Blood” singer “super talented,” adding, “It would be so nice having Shawn Mendes and Maluma on a song because uniting the cultures, so I think that could be super nice.”
