Oscars 2018: Despite being few, Latinos win big at the 90th Academy Awards

Although the Latino presence was wide at the ceremony, the Latino nominees were only a few. Still, it didn't stop them from winning big.

Another year for the Oscars and a whole new batch of artists leave their mark in movie history. This year (like many before it) the Latino nominees were scarce. However, the ones that were nominated were contesting in very important categories.

2018 Oscars: The Hottest Looks at the Red Carpet: Salma Hayek, Gina Rodriguez, and More

The wins started pouring in with the best foreign film category. “Una Mujer Fantástica” was a top contender to win the award leading up to the awards cermony, but it still faced some fierce competition. The film was directed by Sebastián Lelio and co-written by Gonzalo Maza and Lelio himself. Utimately the Chilean production took the Academy Award home!

Can anyone say: chi chi chi le le viva Chile?

There were two Latino films in the run for best animated feature "Ferdinand" and "Coco". In a perfect world, both would have taken an award home, but the colorful "Coco" came out as the only victor.

Quite a fitting win considering the amazing show that Gael Garcia Bernal, Natalia LaFourcade and Miguel put on stage minutes before the best animated winner was announced.

An then there was Guillermo del Toro and "The Shape of Water". Guillermo couldn't help but get emotional as he recieved his first oscar (How is i possible?). He mentioned some of his Latino peers —among them Salma Hayek and Gael García Bernal— and took one of the most coveted awards of the night for himself, Best Director. His baby, meanwhile, won a few awards of its own: Best Original ScoreBest Production Design, and the biggest award of them all with Best Picture

The mexican director was the Latino superstar of the 90th edition of the Awards and we couldn't be more proud —Bravo, Guillermo!

Oscars 2018: The Complete List of Winners

All in all, Latinos were big winners of the 2017 Oscars. Sure, Eiza Gonzálea, Eugenio Derbez, Daniela Vega, Oscar Issac and Gina Rodriguez presented; and there were performances by Gael García Bernal along with Natalia LaFourcade and Miguel, not to mention Lin Manuel Miranda, but the lack of actual Latino nominees was not overlooked.

The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC), a group dedicated to highlight Latinos contribution to media in genera —complete with their own awards, the Impact Awards—, was bringing awareness to the issue and motivating people to protest against it with the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite on Twitter
