Remembering Late Marlins Pitcher Jose Fernandez A Year After His Death (PHOTOS)

It’s been exactly one year since the tragic death of Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez.

Just weeks after the news of his girlfriend’s pregnancy, Fernandez died in a boat crash off Miami Beach, on the morning of September 25, 2016. The Cuban-American baseball player passed away, along with two others on board, Eduardo Rivero and Emilio Jesus Macias. The tragic news broke across Miami and so did everyone’s hearts. Days later, thousands of fans gathered to say their farewells to Fernandez at Ermita de la Caridad and St. Brendan Catholic Church.

Maria Arias, girlfriend and mother of his daughter Penelope, still remembers the moment they found out they were having a baby girl.

“He loved her from the moment she was conceived,” Arias says of Fernandez, who also picked her name, Penelope, after a Spanish song. “Everyone knew how excited he was to be a dad, he made sure of it.”

“I will forever talk about him. I will never let his memory die. I will always keep him alive, no matter how much that hurts me. Because she deserves that from me; and from all of us. And so does he,” she told People magazine. “He was a beautiful person, we who truly knew him talk about him that way and value him that way, and we’ll continue to do that.”
