LA REINA DEL SUR LANDS IN CYRPUS

La Reina del Sur (The Queen of the South), the production distributed by Telemundo Internacional, premiered this Monday in Cyprus on channel Antenna in the 22:10 hours time slot.

La Reina del Sur, based on the book by Spanish writer and journalist Arturo Perez-Reverte, has been translated into more than 30 languages and has been published in more than 50 countries, while also reaching the number one spot among best-selling Spanish-language fiction books in the United States.

Several countries including Mexico, Costa Rica, Uruguay, Spain and the United States have surrendered to the charms of La Reina del Sur.

In the United States, the production’s success was not only reflected on the small screen, but also on the Internet. Of the10 million “La Reina del Sur” followers, about 4 million followed the telenovela via Internet. The telenovela’s website at Telemundo.com has been a major nexus for fans, who can enjoy extra content, including interviews and unique scenes.

In Spain, the telenovela remained one of the favorite fiction programs, registering an average share of up to 19.4% in primetime, competing with titles such as Hospital Central, Spartacus, The Mentalist and Comando Actualidad.

Teresa Mendoza is a young Mexican woman of humble origins, whose life takes a drastic turn and ends up becoming the queen of a world of narcotics trafficking.  Her lover, an aircraft pilot for the Juarez cartel named El Güero Davila, is killed for betraying his organization, which forces Teresa to escape to Spain to save her life.

In Spain she falls in love with Santiago Lopez, a tobacco and hash smuggler who involves her in constant travels between Morocco and Spain. Teresa takes advantage of her ability in negotiating and establishes what will become the most powerful drug empire beyond the borders of the Iberian Peninsula.
