Cholesterol, which is actually a fatlike substance found in your body can come from animal foods like meat, dairy and eggs. There are two types of cholesterol: HDL and LDL cholesterol. HDL is “good” cholesterol because it protects your heart. However LDL cholesterol, the harmful kind that we talk about when we mention high cholesterol levels is bad for your heart. Although your body produces cholesterol naturally based on your genes, you can affect the cholesterol that your body ingests from food.

High cholesterol levels are a very real danger for Latinos. Hispanics are 36 percent more likely to have uncontrolled cholesterol levels which increase their risk for heart disease, the leading cause of death for Latinos.

One of the most important and easiest changes you can make to lower your cholesterol levels is to make healthier food choices. Choose lean meats, fresh fruit and vegetables and foods with high fiber content like whole grains. Adding fish and nuts could add healthy protein and essential fatty acids that improve cholesterol levels. It is also important to reduce salt intake because it can increase the risk of hypertension.

You could also lower your cholesterol by starting a simple exercise routine. Even if it is just walking around the block for an hour a day, you will feel the difference quickly. Smoking can also negatively affect your health so quitting as soon as possible could really help lower your cholesterol. If a healthy lifestyle change isn’t enough to lower your cholesterol levels, you may need to speak to a doctor about starting a medication regimen.
