1 Year After “Despacito”: Here Are the Numbers, the Awards, and the Celebrities Who Danced to It (VIDEOS)
One year ago today, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee made history.
"I woke up one morning with this despacito in my head, and it was pretty much that chorus melody and obviously just the word despacito...that's all I had. So then I recorded it on my phone," Fonsi recalls to E! News. "Then we were at the studio in my house with Erika Ender, she's a great songwriter from Panama, and that's where I said, ‘Maybe we can pick up from this idea that I had. It's a feel-good song and let's just mess around with the word despacito.' That was kind of where we started, and that afternoon we finished the song."
Not only was the entire world dancing to “Despacito,” the smash hit won four awards at the 18th Latin Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Urban Fusion/Performance, and Best Short Form Music Video. It won Collaboration of the Year and Favorite Pop/Rock Song and was nominated for Video of the Year at the 45th American Music Awards.
It doesn’t end there.
With 4.6 billion YouTube views, “Despacito” also became the “most viewed video of all-time.”
