Director Lee Unkrich thanked “the incredible people of Mexico and their beautiful traditions of Día de Muertos” in his acceptance speech Sunday night. He also thanked the teams at Disney and Pixar for “trusting us to tell this unique story and empowering us to tell it with the respect and the dignity that it deserved.”

The film centers on the Mexican tradition of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) and features an all-Latino cast including Gael García Bernal and Benjamin Bratt.

Coco was competing against GKids’ The Breadwinner, Dreamworks and Fox’s Ferdinand and The Boss Baby, and Good Deed’s Loving Vincent.

Coco is also the first Pixar film to be solely dedicated to a foreign culture. This award means a lot for the Hispanic community, specially after several statements against Mexicans provoked by elements of the U.S. government in the past year.
